Blood Sugar Monitoring
(All prices include VAT)
The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test checks how well your body handles sugar. Your blood sugar is measured while fasting and again after a sweet drink. It is used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes, and is especially important in pregnancy to screen for gestational diabetes. A higher than expected rise means the body is not clearing sugar well, which may need diet, activity or treatment. A normal result is reassuring. It gives a fuller picture than a single glucose reading.

Around two hours from arrival. You give a first sample, drink the glucose drink, then stay in the branch while the remaining samples are taken at set times. Book a morning slot and plan the rest of your day around it.
Yes, fast overnight, commonly 8 to 12 hours. Plain water is allowed and helps, since being hydrated makes each draw easier. No food, no coffee or tea, no juice, no chewing gum and no smoking during the fast.
No. The timing of each sample after the drink is the whole basis of the test, and moving around changes how quickly your body clears the sugar. If you leave, the test has to be repeated from the beginning on another day, including the fast.
Mild nausea, warmth or lightheadedness after the drink is common and usually passes within a short while. Tell the staff so they know. If you vomit or feel close to fainting, tell them immediately, since the test may need to be stopped and rebooked rather than continued.
It is the same family of test and it is one of the standard ways to screen for diabetes in pregnancy, but the exact protocol your doctor wants may differ in the amount of the drink and the number of samples. Book what your doctor asked for specifically rather than choosing yourself, and bring the request with you.
No. The test needs a supervised drink and blood samples taken at exact times, with you resting in between, so it is a branch appointment.
